Forney Independent School District is introducing a new program for intermediate and middle school students focused on developing a plan and purpose for each student. The course title, “irl” (In Real Life), is designed to engage students with future-ready tools and a curriculum created to lay the foundation for each student’s personal success.

The City of Forney is looking for neighborhoods interested in hosting gatherings for National Night Out, on Tuesday, October 5th. What is National Night Out?

The last weekend before school starts on Monday, August 16 is directly in the front windshield. However, the teachers in Forney ISD have been going at it since August 2 and the new teachers have been involved since July 26. So far the reports on their activities have been awe inspiring already--these people are getting ready to have the best year ever!

Liverpool’s Mayor, Joanne Anderson, labelled the decision “incomprehensible” and expressed strongly that she is “Hugely concerned and disappointed by the decision to delete Liverpool’s World Heritage Status, especially since the decision comes a decade after UNESCO last visited the city and inspected it in person!” UNESCO had added the city to its list in 2004, but it was placed on the organization’s “Heritage in Danger List” in 2021 as a result of fears that modern developments were marring the “docklands” of their historic character!

Last week, we left Steve back in Taiwan (seems he liked it there) with President Nixon still in office. Steve relates that Taiwan was dismissed from the United Nations, with China replacing them. (I must admit that though I was in college and taking Political Science courses, I do not remember all the ins-and-outs of the political scenes across the world. Commerce, Texas, was enough to occupy my few non-collegiate thoughts most of the time!)

One day, years ago, a student who was noticeably shy, but studious and “old” for his age, slowly sidled up to my desk after the final bell of the school day had rung and asked, “How do you know so much stuff? No matter what we bring up during the ‘5 minutes before’ and ‘5 minutes after’ discussions in front and behind the regular lectures and discussions, you seem to have something that applies to add to our words.”

Mesquite Police Department Interim Police Chief David Faaborg announced the promotion of Lieutenant Stephen Biggs to the rank of Captain. He will now oversee the department’s Staff Support Bureau of hiring and training officers, school resource officers, community policing and crime prevention, as well as command the department’s S.W.A.T team and will continue serving as the primary Public Information Officer.

Members of the Crandall Middle School coaching staff have spent their summer helping their students be active and work on their skills. They are taking time to engage their students and care for their students outside of school.

I love fishing for, catching and eating catfish throughout the year. During the winter months fishing for blue catfish is at its peak and lakes such as Tawakoni and Texoma produce some jumbo size blues. But summer is prime time for ‘action’ catfishing, a time when limits of ‘eater’ catfish is often the norm. I do a good bit of trotlining for catfish in the summer. A short trotline with 25 hooks baited with cut bait or fresh liver is a good way to put fillets in the cooler. While waiting for my line to produce I usually fish from the bank with rod and reel.
