August 26 is Just Because Day!

Many times in life we do things because they are expected to be donewashing dishes, walking the dog, raking leaves. And then along comes a perfect day--Just Because Day! This day is celebrated annually on August 26th and what wonderful coincidence in timing this year’s holiday has bestowed on the world!

State Clarifies Kaufman/Henderson County Line

A decades-long misinterpretation of the southern boundary of Kaufman County bordering Henderson County was clarified this month in correspondence from the State of Texas, General Land Office (GLO). After more than two years of Kaufman County’s historical research, document review and consultations with the office of the Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office, the Deputy Director of the GLO Surveying Services wrote that the area in question is, in fact, not a part of Kaufman County, as is illustrated and confirmed in state records and archives.

Forney ISD Board Proposes New Lower Tax Rate for 3rd Year in a Row; $13 Million in Bond Refinance Savings

For the third year in a row, the FISD Board has proposed a lower tax rate for residents living within the Forney ISD school boundaries. The Board will vote to approve the new rate at the next meeting in September. Since 2020, the Forney ISD tax rate has decreased by a total of 17 cents.

Forney Independent School District is introducing a new program for intermediate and middle school students focused on developing a plan and purpose for each student. The course title, “irl” (In Real Life), is designed to engage students with future-ready tools and a curriculum created to lay the foundation for each student’s personal success.

The last weekend before school starts on Monday, August 16 is directly in the front windshield. However, the teachers in Forney ISD have been going at it since August 2 and the new teachers have been involved since July 26. So far the reports on their activities have been awe inspiring already--these people are getting ready to have the best year ever!

Liverpool’s Mayor, Joanne Anderson, labelled the decision “incomprehensible” and expressed strongly that she is “Hugely concerned and disappointed by the decision to delete Liverpool’s World Heritage Status, especially since the decision comes a decade after UNESCO last visited the city and inspected it in person!” UNESCO had added the city to its list in 2004, but it was placed on the organization’s “Heritage in Danger List” in 2021 as a result of fears that modern developments were marring the “docklands” of their historic character!

Last week, we left Steve back in Taiwan (seems he liked it there) with President Nixon still in office. Steve relates that Taiwan was dismissed from the United Nations, with China replacing them. (I must admit that though I was in college and taking Political Science courses, I do not remember all the ins-and-outs of the political scenes across the world. Commerce, Texas, was enough to occupy my few non-collegiate thoughts most of the time!)
