Mesquite Fire Fighters Participate in Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

The Mesquite Fire Department participated in the Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb Saturday September 4th. Mesquite had 25 firefighters participating, the most out of the 101 fire departments represented. Each year, firefighters climb 110 flights of stairs (most in full bunker gear and wearing an air pack), representing the 110 floors of the World Trade Center. Each firefighter represents an individual firefighter who lost their life on that fateful day, and each firefighter carries the nametag of a fallen firefighter. “We climb because they climbed”. We promised we would never forget!

Texas Horned Lizard Hatchling Release Marks Milestone to Save State Reptile

Once common, the Texas horned lizard is now one of more than 1,300 species of concern across the state. But there is good news for the little “horned toad.” Today, a coalition of zoos and wildlife scientists released 204 captive-raised hatchlings into the wild (100 of them hatched at the Fort Worth Zoo), and this follows new evidence this year that previously released lizards are now reproducing. Meanwhile, a landmark bipartisan proposal now moving through Congress, the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act, would bring the resources needed to save this species and hundreds like it.

Legislature Set to Draw New Political Maps in 3rd Special Session

Returning to Austin Monday for their third extra session of the year, lawmakers will attempt to draw new district lines for Congress and state House and Senate districts in the face of a rapidly approaching primary season. Delays from COV- ID-19 and court challenges pushed the release of critical US Census data back months and made redistricting during the regular session impossible. While there is still time to draw maps and make the scheduled March primary dates, last session the Legislature approved two back-up primary election dates in April and May should the contentious process drag on.
