Driving on a highway, you might notice the twisted wires that the highway department uses to create a safety barrier. The placement of the barriers is determined by a number of factors–angle of roadside, approaching curvature of the roadway, number of accidents per direction– which all have been carefully studied. In other words, the relationship of driver to road conditions determines placement of the barrier cable. Another interesting fact is that while the cables are strong and flexible (much like a teacher), the steel supports are meant to break and give way to protect the driver in case they accidentally veer off the road into them.
So how do highway barriers equate to classroom activities? How does a good relationship between a teacher and their students develop? The professional educator has learned to spot the signs from their students of the types of learning that connects them to the subject, therefore enabling the students to retain the information taught. We know when we involve the student in the learning process, they retain the learned information so much better.
Forney Education Foundation has been very blessed to see firsthand how involved the entire school district is in the success of the students in Forney ISD. Now that there are 17,000+ students in the district, many might wonder how FISD can continue the upward arc of learning. The students and teachers keep showing up and demonstrating their commitment to the whole process of education for all the students in K-12. We remember that the classroom learning is important, but it isn’t the “complete” educational experience without the extracurricular activities that all the students in FISD experience and learn from. Please go to www.forneyisdfoundation. org and see how the Foundation helps the students and teachers in Forney ISD smooth out the curves and accelerate towards their futures.
