One thing I’ve learned through the years about catching fish: There is usually a pattern and bait that will produce action, regardless the lake, time of year or species. Finding that pattern is the challenge!
The Forney Independent School District (ISD) cheer squads continue to have success during the competition season. The Warren Middle School, Forney High School and North Forney High School cheer squads recently competed in the 2022 National Cheer Association (NCA) High School Cheer Nationals which were held at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas, Texas on Friday, Jan. 21 and Saturday, Jan. 22. All three squads returned home from the competition with top honors. The competition consists of teams from across the country competing in the NCA High School Cheer Nationals Competition.
The Jackrabbits were firing on all cylinders Friday January 21 as they defeated Crandall 68-62. Forney improved to 20-7 overall and finished the first round of district 6-1, tied for 1st Place. The Jackrabbits had a stifling defense for most of the game and played well together on the offensive end. Four players scored double digits led by Sr. Forward Nick Bene’ with 19 and Jr. Guard Ayden McDonald who scored 16. Right behind them were Jr. Guard G Edwards with 14 and Sr. Forward Jake White with 11. Jr. Guard JJ Jefferson rounded out the scoring with 8 of his own. Bene’ also added 10 rebounds and 5 assists.
The Forney High School and North Forney High School Color Guard squads recently competed at the North Texas Color Guard Association (NTCA) competition, on Saturday, January 22, at Arlington Martin High School in Arlington, Texas and returned home with several top honors.
The Fort Worth Convention Center was host to the 2021-2022 UIL Spirit State Championships. It’s a gameday competition and the overall goal is to lead the crowd effectively no matter the sport you are cheering for.
It didn’t take long for the first pair of Legacy Class largemouth bass of the 2022 Toyota ShareLunker season to find their way into angler’s boats. It was more than fitting that Tyler Anderson from Austin and Wendell Ramsey, Sr. of San Angelo, landed 14.48 and 14.92 – pounders respectively during week one of the season at O.H. Ivie. Last year, the fishery produced 12 of the 23 Legacy Lunkers during a remarkable 2021 season.

While sitting in a deer blind looking out over a West Texas vista that seemed to stretch on forever, the tune, “Miles and Miles of Texas” came to mind. Songwriters Diane Johnston and Tommy Camfield surely must have spent time on this ranch in Mitchell County way back sixty years ago when they penned the words to their famous song.

As deer season approaches, Kaufman County hunters need to be aware of a new requirement. Because of the neurological disease in deer found in this region of Texas called Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), hunters who harvest mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, red deer, or other CWD susceptible species within the Trans-Pecos, Panhandle, and South-Central Texas CWD Containment and Surveillance Zones are REQUIRED to bring their animals to a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) check station within 48 hours of harvest. There will be two check stations for Hunt/Kaufman/ Rockwall/Van Zandt Counties. Dates, times, and locations are listed below.

Five members of the Angelo State University Rambelles soccer team, including Cassidy Hill of Forney, have earned Lone Star Conference postseason honors that were announced at the LSC Championship Banquet on Nov. 11.

My phone conversation with Lake Tawakoni catfish guide Tony Pennebaker went something like this. “Luke, I know you are all about catching these ‘eater’ blues weighing between 2 and 10 pounds rather than specifically targeting trophy class fish but you might just catch both on our upcoming trip. The fall bite has been very steady,” says Tony.
Turkeys might be in short supply at the grocery store this year but there are plenty of them roaming the woods and fields across much of Texas. Luke arrowed this young gobbler last week on the Dale River Ranch.
I wrapped up the month long bow only season without releasing an arrow at a whitetail. I had plenty of opportunities at younger bucks and smaller doe but my goal was to put venison in the freezer. I was targeting a mature animal that was packing lots of venison. Each year, I try to take a deer as early in the season as possible so that there will be plenty of venison to prepare at upcoming hunting camps.
