Here we are, another Thanksgiving looming over us. I don’t know what to say. Should we talk about the fallacy that is the first Thanksgiving? Should we stop to consider the ridiculousness that is believing a group of Wampanoag Indians welcomed the Pilgrims with open arms, taught them how to live these mean lands, ate with them, and just disappeared into the mist? Here, colonists, take this land and create a white culture dedicated to liberty and opportunity. We’ll just be over here not doing much. Don’t kill the thankful messenger. The Smithsonian agrees with me. But anywho, that’s not what we need to talk about today. I happen to love and adore Thanksgiving. It’s my personal chance to reflect on the grace that has occurred in my life, for the mercies bestowed upon me that I did not deserve, for the tenderness shown me that I haven’t always paid forward. Yet, it’s different now that I don’t have parents in this world. My kiddos are spread out more often that I’d like. Turns out (maybe take notes on this if your children are still under your roof) that kids tend to grow up and learn to live, think, and feast autonomously. They migrate to places where they cannot get back to you on a dime. They are surrounded by other wonderful people called in-laws, who share in your love and admiration of them and who also enjoy their company. They have to do this thing called “sharing the holidays.” Here I sit. No parents. No set plans. No menu. Thanksgiving orphans unite.

Retail holidays now dot the consumer landscape throughout much of the year. That shift has made a day like Black Friday somewhat less unique than it was in years past. However, Black Friday remains the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season, and it’s still a major day for retailers big and small.

One of the most American holidays is upon us now – Thanksgiving! The beginning of the holiday is somewhat common lore with the Native Americans helping the Pilgrims to survive and eventually thrive. The example that the Native Americans gave the Pilgrims and the world at large is to help your fellow man when you have plenty, regardless of your differences.

One of the best ideas that people have embraced through social media is using the month of November to remind themselves why they are thankful for the life they have. And many, many of those posts refer to the fact that the poster knows that they are indeed blessed with a good life. But some of our neighbors do not all share the same blessings, and that is where we receive the chance to give back. Part of the blessing in giving back is knowing you have genuinely helped someone who needed a hand up, and doing so anonymously is a soul-enriching way that almost has no equal.

Last Thursday, November 7, was Election Day across the State of Texas. For residents of Forney, there were a number of propositions on the ballot, including several at the state level, the local level, and for the Forney Independent School District.

Celebrations frequently involve entertaining guests or heading out for nights on the town to enjoy the company of others. Often food and beverages are part of the fun, and that includes alcoholic beverages, which may flow a little more readily during festive occasions.
