The Kaufman County District Attorney’s Office stands in unwavering support of the family of Aaron Martinez in their pursuit of justice. On Monday morning, the District Attorney’s Office was fully prepared to proceed to trial in its efforts to secure justice on behalf of Mr. Martinez and his loved ones.

As our community continues to await the apprehension of Trevor McEuen, the individual indicted for the capital murder of Mr. Martinez, Kaufman County District Attorney Erleigh Wiley expresses her strong support for Governor Greg Abbott’s proposed bail reform legislation. The legislation seeks a constitutional amendment that would empower judges to deny bond to individuals charged with violent offenses, including capital murder. DA Wiley encourages members of the community to advocate for this critical reform, which she believes could have prevented McEuen from being released ahead of his scheduled jury trial.

Under current Texas law, McEuen was legally entitled to bond. The Kaufman County District Attorney’s Office vigorously opposed any efforts to reduce that bond. Ultimately, the Court imposed a $2 million bond—double the typical amount set for similar charges statewide—along with the strictest possible conditions, including electronic monitoring and house arrest. Still, DA Wiley emphasizes that for violent offenders, even the most stringent bond conditions are insufficient safeguards. “Whether the bond is $2 million, $5 million, or more—if a defendant can post it, they will walk free,” she said.

Following McEuen’s failure to appear for trial, the Court immediately forfeited his bond and issued a warrant for his arrest, ordering that he be held without bond upon capture. Despite this, Texas law may still require that a bond be set at a future date—another reason why Governor Abbott’s proposed amendment is both timely and necessary.

The District Attorney’s Office has maintained direct and ongoing communication with Mr. Martinez’s family to keep them informed during this difficult time. DA Wiley urges the public to remain vigilant and to report any information regarding Trevor McEuen’s whereabouts to law enforcement immediately. The Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to McEuen’s arrest.

“Justice for the Martinez family will come,” said DA Wiley. “In the meantime, we ask the public to stay alert and help us ensure the safety of our community.”
