Forney City Councilmember James Traylor has filed an ethics violation complaint with the Texas Ethics Commission against city council challenger candidate Nofel Molai for misrepresentation of office title in campaign materials.

“We should hold anyone running for office to the highest standard of ethics and honesty,” said Councilmember Traylor. “Nofel Mola has clearly violated this expectation by deceitfully misleading voters with the suggestion he currently holds office. As a sitting member of the City Council, I had no choice but to ask for an investigation by the Texas Ethics Commission into the dishonest tactics of Nofel Molai.”

A short drive through Forney shows multiple 4x4 signs with this misrepresentation.

Chapter 255 of the Texas Election Code states if you are not the incumbent in the office you are seeking, you must make it clear that you are seeking election rather than reelection by using the word “for” to clarify that you don’t hold that office. The word “for” must be at least one-half the type size as the name of the office and should appear immediately before the name of the office sought.

“With all the recent successes in Forney over the last few years, like strengthening our police department and attracting new high-quality retail development that is bringing in well-paying jobs, it’s no surprise he is trying to take credit by making it seem like he currently serves on the Council,” continued Traylor. “But the reality is that Nofel Molai had no part in these positive developments for our great city and should issue a public apology for misleading Forney families into believing he had something to do with all our momentum.”

In addition to filing a complaint with the Texas Ethics Commission, Councilman Traylor requests Nofel Molai immediately remove all campaign signs and materials with the clear misrepresentation.

“Nofel Molai opposed additional funding for our police officers last year, and now he is opposing campaign ethics rules,” added Traylor. “He has a lot of explaining to do to the families of Forney.”
