The students in Forney ISD have been participating in Get Fired Up for Reading since January 27. The goal for the readers in FISD is 4 million minutes! They log in their hours for a chance to win prizes and have until March 16 to participate. There are many prizes available, including a firetruck ride to school!
This event wraps perfectly around National Read Across America Day, which is celebrated every year on March 2, the birthday of American author Dr. Seuss. This is a day dedicated to encouraging children and young people to read, and motivating parents and teachers to help them do so. The day was created and is celebrated annually by the National Education Association. The idea originated in 1997 as an opportunity to instill a love of reading in the young people of America and make it the fun activity it is. The first actual celebration was March 2, 1998, on the national front and has been commemorated every year since then.
In Forney, the Forney Fire Department has stepped up and become the main sponsor of Get Fired Up for Reading. The importance of reading for all of the children in the Forney Community is well known to help them in all of their future living and learning. And thanks to the sponsors this year in addition to the Forney Fire Department, including City of Forney, Forney Education Foundation, Atmos Energy, Wal-Mart, Nothing Bundt Cakes, and Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop. These businesses support the value of reading.
