In Meeting Room #183 of the “O. C.” (Forney I. S. D. Keith Bell Opportunity Central), the FORNEY RETIRED EDUCATION ASSOCIATION held its 1st official meeting, which was opened by President, Georgia Power, who also gave a hearty welcome address to members, who had been enjoying refreshments and “Social Time” from 9:30— 10:00 a. m.
Membership in the “FREA” (and attendance at all general meetings) is open to retired school personnel.
The opening prayer was given by Theresa Hale, 1st Vice-President, and that was followed by Pledges of Allegiance to both flags: the United States and Texas, led by Vivian Themer.
The meeting then moved directly to the day’s guest speaker, Dr. Eric Steinke, PT, DPT, FAAPOMPT. This physical therapist held a very informative session that was concerned with some of the physical problems which usually hit all of us one time or another, but especially those that might be causing trouble to folks of retirement age. After he had given his opening speech and showed examples of treatments, Dr. Steinke opened the floor to questions from members— and he answered them with symptoms and the treatments that usually help to alleviate them. He also addressed “insurance” for those who seek treatment and what usually will be covered, which is almost everything! After he had taken the time to answer every question posed, he reviewed a few of the most important details of his talk and invited all to come to his clinic for initial evaluations.
After Dr. Steinke’s informative session (He was allowed to go 1st because he had patients waiting for treatments.), Vivian Themer, 3rd Vice-President, presented “The Day’s Inspiration,” which certainly uplifted all in attendance with the message: “Don’t be a snowman and melt— MOVE!”
Next was a presentation of the minutes of the earlier planning meeting in October, and President Power asked for approval, which was unanimous.
Treasurer Cindy Huffman’s financial report was approved unanimously after being read by President Power, who explained a few entries and continued the meeting with a LEGISLATIVE UPDATE.
Next, Norma Rain, Parliamentarian and Community Volunteer Service Chair, explained the purpose of volunteering and keeping records of volunteer hours so that they can be credited to the Forney Chapter.
Next was the presentation of the CERTIFICATE OF AFFILIATION and a discussion/presentation of STANDING RULES. Also discussed were the importance of and the reasons for “Protecting the DEFINED BENEFIT RETIREMENT PLAN,” related to the drawing of benefits for those educators who had also paid into the Social Security Program.
The time passed quickly, and as the meeting came to a close, the announcement rang out to “Mark your calendars for 9:30 a. m., Tuesday, February 11, 2025, in Room #183 at the O. C., and also, mark your calendars for the March 18th meeting at 6:00 p. m. in room #183 at the O.C. for some great bingo fun!!!”
Meeting was adjourned by the President, and many stayed a while longer to discuss the meeting and to catch up on “important local news.”
