Sonya Bannister is set to start the position of Engage Specialist at the OC, after serving as the campus secretary at North Forney High School for eight years and working with Forney ISD for 24.

When asked what made her stay for so long, she said, “I just love what I do, interacting with the students. That’s the best part, honestly.”

Her position as secretary was a full-time job that kept her busy, but she always made time to connect outside of her office. She thanked the administration for allowing her to leave her office and interact with students and the school whenever she wanted.

Working alongside her latest principal, Michael Jung, was something Ban-nister really enjoyed. They both shared an interest in being active within the school and were driven by the urge to make students feel welcomed and seen.

To attend as many events as possible, she made it a part of her job to keep up with Jung’s calendar. She ensured he attended events that most principals wouldn’t typically attend. Bannister appreciated that Jung would often say, “Come with me,” allowing her to support the kids as well.

Together, they made an effort to attend campus activities, sports games and UIL competitions. They also celebrated teachers, custodians, administrators and students with awards and fun treats throughout the school year.

Bannister believed in recognizing the hard work of those who often go unnoticed. She wanted the public to appreciate all the positives at North Forney, beyond just the local rumors. To highlight these achievements, she took it upon herself to post online whenever something positive happened at North Forney.

Her move from North Forney to Opportunity Central was prompted when Dr. Justin Terry, Forney ISD’s Superintendent, and Jung met with her about the new position of Engage Specialist. Jung saw this as an opportunity for her to open a new chapter and explore new avenues.

Jung said, “To dive into something you don’t normally do, will feed your soul.”

While she is sad to be away from the school she loves, she is excited for the opportunity to help foster a new community within Forney.
