You can change the world without changing the world. Individuals that share their lives with the people around them leave a legacy that spans generations. This sentence perfectly sums up, at least to me, the intent of teachers in the realm of public education.

Massachusetts became the first U.S. state to enact a compulsory education law in 1852, having already passed a similar law in 1647 when it was still a British colony. The 1852 law required every city and town to offer primary school, focusing on grammar and basic arithmetic. New York followed the next year, and by 1918, all American children were required to attend elementary school. Today’s public schools look much different than the first ones established during the 19th century. Public school systems are overseen by state departments of education and by local school districts and publicly elected school boards. The federal government also plays an important role, providing information on how to improve the state of public education for all states through the latest education data and research.

And at the very local level of Forney ISD, the Forney Education Foundation aids the district’s students and teachers through teacher-requested grants. And since the introduction of the Adopt-A-Grant program, the Forney Community has been able to directly impact a teacher’s vision for their students.

The wonderful teachers in Forney ISD share their lives ever y day in the classroom and out, thereby creating their own legacies. In fact, FEF has bestowed on several individuals the title of “Legacy Member” due to their sharing of their life and time to benefit the Foundation that in turn benefits generations of Forney ISD students.
