In the world of gardening, there are three types of plants–annuals, biennials and perennials. Annuals grow and bloom in one year and then die. Biennials grow the first year, bloom the second year, and then die. Perennials grow for two or three years before blooming and then continue growing and blooming for many years.
The Forney Education Foundation could be considered a master gardener because of the different teacher- requested grants that are funded every year. The Board recognizes that some of the grants requested can be funded and put into action immediately i.e. an “annual” type of grant. Some of the requested grants really take the two years to show their impact on students, i.e. a “biennial” type of grant. And some of them require the three years like a “perennial” plant to establish the ongoing positive effect on the students. The teachers in Forney ISD understand the differences in their various requests for grants and plan accordingly and explain in their submitted proposals how their request impacts the students in their respective classrooms.
The Grant Committee enjoys reading through the teachers’ requests and envisioning how the impact can be on the students in those respective classrooms. The difficult part for the committee is narrowing down which grants to fund. And that is where the interested public can help through the Adopt-A-Grant Program. The more grants funded through the Adopt-A-Grant program means that the committee can select more deserving requests since there is a budgeted amount allowed annually, and with the public’s funding, more “planting” can occur.
