On Sunday, June 23, 2024, at approximately 0830 hours, Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible missing person at US Hwy 175 and the Trinity River in Crandall. Deputies contacted family members who stated that adult male Anthony Villarreal had been missing since Wednesday, June 19, 2024.

On June 22, 2024, family members located his vehicle under the US Hwy 175 bridge at the Trinity River in Crandall, Texas, where Villarreal had kayaked in the past.

Crandall Fire Department requested assistance from the Dallas Fire/Rescue Swift Water Rescue Team, who responded to the location. Deputies on scene requested assistance from the Texas Department of Public Safety Helicopter (DPS-101), who responded to the location and quickly located the missing persons kayak approximately six miles south of the US 175 bridge tangled in trees.

Dallas Fire/Rescue Swift Water Rescue Team launched a boat from the bridge on FM 3039 between Crandall and Combine and traveled north, approximately 300 yards north of the FM 3039 bridge. Villarreal was recovered and pronounced deceased by Kaufman County JP-1, Judge Bardin. Villarreal was sent to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office in Dallas for an autopsy. The primary investigation will be led by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department since Villarreal is believed to have drowned on a public waterway in Texas.
