What are your favorite television shows or movies? I am looking for some new things to watch on television this summer and wonder what you are watching. Give me some ideas.

Dear Summer TV,

Boy, have you asked the wrong person this question. Anyone who knows me would laugh that I am even attempting an answer. You see, Aunt B doesn’t watch much television. So little that, at times, I actually wish I watched more. Now that’s a switch. Most people I hear wish they watched less. The reason I wish I watched more at times is because I do think some benefit comes from zoning out in front of the television. The problem arises when there is too much of that zoning out, but that isn’t the question here, is it?

Honestly, at my house if the television is even on, it is some type of sports game and it isn’t me that turns it on. I’m not pointing fingers here, but you can probably figure that one out.

There are two problems here. One, usually watching television doesn’t even come into my mind, and two, I am so sensitive to much of what is on television or in the movies that I usually need my family or friends to watch first and tell me if I can handle the show. You might think it is bad language or sexy scenes that bother me, but no I can handle most of that. It is the violence and sadness. I can’t handle the violence. A little hint of violence is all it takes for me to leave the room. Believe me, I am no one's favorite to take to a movie. The most common thing I hear is, “It’s only a movie. Why are you so bothered?” That question doesn’t even make sense to me. The bigger question to me is, “Why aren’t you bothered?’

Back to the question. When I do watch, I like comedy, chick flicks, true stories, sports movies, educational stuff, and usually just feel-good stuff. This can be hard because generally the plots are supposed to take you to a down spot before they bring you back to feeling good. I understand the principle; I just don’t like it.

I never watch the news, and I never will. People ask me, “How do you know what is happening in the world?” Believe me, people tell you. I believe most of the news is sensationalism aimed at getting us worked up. No thank you. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: “It is why The Forney Messenger is so important to me. They are dedicated to bringing good news and positive things to us, readers.”

Watch some good television and movies this summer if you like. There are plenty of opinions out there of things to watch. Just do Aunt B a little favor and spend more time having fun and living your own life than you spend watching someone else live theirs.

Love,

Aunt B
