The City of Forney will host its third annual Memorial Day 5K this Saturday, May 25, at the Forney Community Park on FM 548. While, for many, Memorial Day marks the unofficial kickoff of summer, the Forney Parks and Events department holds this event each year to provide a moment for citizens to pause and honor the sacrifices of the men and women who have given their lives in service to our country.
This free event begins at 9:00 AM, with participants checking in at 8:00 AM. Registration is currently open online, but walk-up participants may also sign up on-site the day of the run. To pre-register online, visit www.forneytx.gov and click on Special Events under the Departments tab, or sign up through the link provided on the Forney Parks and Events Facebook page.
In a city as fast-growing as Forney, Special Events Coordinator Ricky Holscher knows there are a large number of our Forney Family members whose lives have been touched by military service and sacrifice. As a veteran himself, Ricky organized this event two years ago to provide a way for the community to come together in memory of fallen soldiers.
Families, groups, and individuals of all ages are encouraged to join their community members as they walk or run the course at their own pace. With American flags marking the trail, this is a quick, fun 5k for anyone who wants to join.
Following the 5K, all runners (or walkers) will be provided water from Racetrack and kids will be given the option to collect the small American flags from the trail to take home. Additionally, Stash’s Table & Fable in downtown Forney will provide a Stash’s Classic meal that day to all registered participants who provide their registration receipt at the restaurant.
For more information on the 5K or other event sponsors, visit the City of Forney’s website or search “Forney Parks and Events” on Facebook.
