It was announced this past week that Forney High School Director of Bands, Cody Newman, was one of 30 teachers is the nation awarded the Country Music Association Foundation Music Teachers of Excellence Award.

Cody Newman came to FHS in 2020 when he accepted the position virtually, due to the pandemic. Since that time he has developed a program that has seen growth both in the number of students involved and the number of awards won by the bands under his direction. Any parent who volunteers with the band knows the exceptional leadership provided by Mr. Newman and his assistant directors. Now that leadership is recognized by a national organization.

When asked what it means to win the Music Teacher of Excellence award, he shared, “Winning this award is very humbling...... So many amazing band directors and teachers have poured into me over the years, and I owe it all to them. My family and my beautiful wife Candice constantly support me, even though the hours are long. It’s a real family adventure. Finally, this award just feels like a win for the kids. They are my inspiration, the reason I love coming to work each day!”

Someone once observed that being a band director is not just a job to Cody Newman. His work with the students is a calling. Cody related, “The true goal behind all of this is to create a place where students are striving to find the best version of themselves, to learn lifelong skills that will allow them to be successful in any direction they take.” Cody Newman is a true Music Teacher of Excellence.
