More than 110 girl scouts from Kaufman County traveled to the civic center to celebrate World Thinking Day (WTD). Local Girl Scout’s Service Unit 174 organized the popular event Sunday, March 24, in honor of the longstanding scouting tradition. “World Thinking Day has always been a fun annual event for our girls. They learn about different cultures, celebrate similarities and differences of fellow girl scouts, and have dialogue about important global issues to encourage more big-picture thinking,” said Susan Hall, Girl Scouts Service Unit 174 Manager.

Typically held on February 22, World Thinking Day is a way to celebrate the global community of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides everywhere. Each year, World Thinking Day focuses on a theme where the whole community works together to find ways to help. The theme for 2024 is: Our World, Our Thriving Future: The Environment and Global Poverty.

During this year’s WTD event, attending Girl Scouts had the opportunity to visit 9 different stations featuring countries such as, England, France, Japan, Madagascar, Mexico and others. Each station included several hands-on educational activities and visiting scouts had their paper “passport” stamped upon arrival. “Often times, our older girl scouts volunteer to represent the different countries and our younger scouts ‘tour.’ They spend the afternoon trying the country’s local cuisine, playing games, crafting and learning from each other,” said Jessica Meeks, Service Unit 174’s World Thinking Day Event Chair. “There’s always great energy in the room and it’s one of our more popular SU events.”

This year’s event opened with a parade to celebrate each country and closed with Girl Scout Promise circle to emphasize the connectivity of the Girl Scout global community.

There are currently 140 girl scouts registered in Kaufman County with several troops either started, or now forming, in area towns like Crandall, Heartland, Forney, Kaufman, and others. Service Unit 174 will be hosting spring recruitment events for the 2024-2025 season starting as early April. To learn more about Girl Scouts, visit: girlscouts. org.
