Forney Independent School District recently announced the District’s 2023-2024 Elementary and Secondary Teachers of the Year. The announcement was made at the Forney Education Foundation’s Teacher of the Year Banquet on Thursday, April 4, 2024. Forney ISD Superintendent Dr. Justin Terry, Forney ISD Board Vice President Chad Johnson, and Board Members Hanna Bateman, Becky Dobbs and Dr. Michael Idemudia announced the winners at the event.

The Forney ISD District Elementary Teacher of the Year is Tomeka Hood and the District’s Secondary Teacher of the Year is Taylor Jeffs.

Hood is a 5th grade math teacher at Smith Intermediate School. When announcing her as the Smith Intermediate Teacher of the Year this year, Principal Fe-licia Marshall stated, “Mrs. Hood is known for her passion and spirit of love. She is wonderful in supporting her students and giving them the encouragement that they need to understand math. We appreciate all that she does and how she fulfills her passion and purpose.”

Taylor Jeffs is a Forensic Science teacher and softball coach at North Forney High School.

“Mrs. Jeffs goes above and beyond everyday inside her classroom and outside of her classroom by coming up with innovative ideas for her curriculum. Taylor is loved within the North Forney family and we are beyond proud seeing everything that she has done and everything she will do in the future,” said North Forney High School 10-12th Grade Principal, Dr. Djara Patton.

The District Teachers of the Year were first selected as their Campus Teacher of the Year earlier this year. Each Campus Teacher of the Year was then interviewed by a District Teacher of the Year selection committee consisting of community members, retired teachers and/or administrators from Forney ISD and professionals from other educational institutions.

Hood and Jeffs now move on to the Region 10 Education Service Center (ESC) Region 10 Elementary and Secondary Teacher of the Year competition. The winners of the Region 10 Teacher of the Year competitions move on to be considered for the State Teacher of the Year honor.
