February is Career and Technical Education (CTE) month in the world of education. CTE is a vital part of the curriculum for Forney ISD, and Forney Education Foundation is a big supporter of CTE students. In fact, the main educational purpose of The Opportunity Central is providing those exact opportunities for careers for the students in Forney ISD.

February also hosts Presidents’ Day, when we celebrate our greatest presidents, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. FEF is especially celebrating Lincoln, who signed the Morrill Act of 1862 to create land-grant colleges in America. The purpose of these colleges was “without excluding other scientific and classical studies and including military tactic, to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts . . . in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the several pursuits and professions in life.”

The philosophy of the Morrill Act has become the basis for CTE in the modern era. The opportunity to embrace the philosophy of the Morrill Act and help students to choose the “practical career”, i.e. workplace careers that include electricians, welders, nurses, and graphic designers as well as retail entrepreneurs among other “blue collar” careers.

Forney ISD has many career tracks available for their students. And Forney Education Foundation supports the students and teachers that embrace the workplace philosophy and look for innovative ways to instruct their students. With the opening of the OC this year, Forney ISD has taken an enormous step forward for all of its students by providing this amazing location that gives them their future.
