In February of 2020, the lowest temperature was 28 degrees on February 14, and the highest was 80 degrees on February 2 In February of 2022, the lowest temperature was 19 degrees on February 3, and the highest was 81 degrees on February 21.
In February of 2023, the lowest temperature was 27 degrees on February 1, and the highest was 87 degrees on February 21. So far in February of 2024, the lowest temperature has been 40 degrees on February 6, and the highest has been 72 degrees on February 1. (as of 2/12/24) I am “betting” that the worst is over for 2024, but I still have much firewood and a large fireplace ready just in case!
**Keep in mind that during 2021’s really, really cold snap, no temperatures of 0 degrees or “minus” readings were recorded at the Terrell Weather Bureau, the source for this article. HOWEVER, some area folks who lived in the less populated and more remote areas of Kaufman County unofficially reported temperature lows of “minus 7 degrees,” and some others reported “minus 3 degrees readings.”
And at our home on Old Military Trail, my two outdoor thermometers each registered “0 degrees” readings one night and “3 degrees” another. This makes sense, as weather persons have more than once this past winter mentioned that temperatures are quite often as much as 7–10 degrees lower in the low “country” areas or in the “wide open” rocky areas. City areas are usually warmer.** Thanks for reading, and if you are really interested in “cold spells” in Kaufman County, take a look back at the years of 1980 through 1983!
