It is that time of the year when high school seniors are anticipating their graduation.
Some are looking forward to college in the fall. Some are ready to enter the job market and learn a trade. Sam Owen chose a different and less traveled path. Sam chose to become a “warrior musician” in the Marines.
Sam comes from a family with a military tradition. His grandfather served in the Army and spent time in Vietnam. His dad is a Marine (once a Marine alway a Marine). When thinking about his future, he started to consider volunteering for the military. Last year he made the commitment. He was given the opportunity to try out for The Marine Musician Enlistment Option Program (MEOP). As a Marine Corps musician he will have the opportunity to serve with one of 10 bands throughout the world.
Every MEOP recruit reports for basic training. After graduation recruits attend the Naval School of Music for advanced instrumental and academic training. “MEOP gives men and women the opportunity to fight and win our nation’s battles while pursuing their passion for music.”
Sam’s passion for music began in music middle school. He chose the alto saxophone as his instrument. In the Forney High Band, he has had several leadership roles, including section leader and woodwind captain. Sam enjoys help student become better band members.
He plans to spent his summer with his family and focus on getting himself spiritually and physically fit before reporting for basic training. Sam does not take his commitment lightly. He looks “forward to serving his country and leaving a positive mark”.
