Is Summer Coming?
Body

I know we don’t have bad winters. I am sure that if anyone from up north sees my question, they will laugh, but I am already so tired of winter. Any ideas for bringing the sunshine in and riding out what little winter we have left in style?

Dear Is Summer Coming, Wow, you aren’t even waiting for the groundhog to do his job. You are already ready to move past this time of year. I get it; I really am ready for it to be over, but let us try to do something to not wish away our future.

Thriving and enjoying wintertime, especially if you are not a fan of the cold, can feel like a tall order. Every time I complain about the cold, my son who lives up north says, “Just what were your temperatures?” It really gets on my nerves that he downplays how desperately cold we have had it here. Is this the part where I would write “lol”? I do sometimes feel like I have to explain when I am joking. What did we use to do before we had “lol”? Sorry, I digressed.

Let’s try to change our mindset and get a little creative with this winter thing.

What about learning a new indoor skill? I have wanted to pick up knitting again. Knitting is definitely a winter indoor thing. Those of us down south wouldn’t like a bit of yarn sitting in our lap at temperatures over 100. What about learning to play the guitar or piano? Teaching yourself to paint, learning a new craft, or picking up one from days past, like my knitting, can be a way to pass the winter away. Learn a new language. There are so many online classes; you can teach yourself about anything.

Start some new indoor exercise routines. Remember summer is coming; let’s get ready for it and those summer clothes. Yoga, Pilates, stretching, dancing, or just indoor walking can all do the trick.

Socialize in new ways. Covid taught us a little about virtual socializing. We all have some of those friends that are more than willing to get out. Invite them over. Do something different. Plan a theme meal or watch some movies together. Play some games. If you have a fireplace, make it cozy. If not, light some candles. Do whatever you need to enjoy the coziness of the inside when it is cold on the outside.

Use this time to dress warm and in layers. We often don’t get to enjoy all the layer dressing down here in the south. I love the way it looks. Now is our time. Pull out those sweaters and scarves.

Really get into your self care. Great time for long baths. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. Our bodies need some extra care with the cold weather and the heating on in our homes.

Go buy a plant. Bringing some outdoors inside can help you survive this time. If you are a person that suffers when the sun isn’t out, I have found those lights that give you some of the spectrums of light to be helpful. I can’t think what they are called but google is your friend.

If nothing helps, take some time and plan an adventure for when warm weather gets here. You can handle this. It will be over before you know it.

Love,

Aunt B
