I wanted to say thank you to the 2023 Forney Jackrabbits-- the players, the coaches, their families, and the many others required for a successful program. I, along with countless Jackrabbit alumni, congratulate you on an amazing season and an incredible play-off run to the state semi-finals. But that’s not why I say thank you. I say thank you for something much greater!

For years, I’ve heard “remember when” added to far too many conversations. Remember when the Jackrabbits were a powerhouse program? Remember when it meant something to wear the black and gold? Remember when we had school spirit? Remember when?

The 2023 Jackrabbits reminded our community of something they (the team) have known for years--a powerhouse program is defined by more than wins and losses. It, too, is defined by the caliber of individual and teammate it produces.

They reminded us that wearing the black and gold means more than affiliation. It’s about commitment to ourselves and each other to be the very best we can be in every situation. And, regardless of the outcome, it’s about holding our heads high knowing we can never truly lose if we choose to either win or learn.

Finally, they reminded us that school spirit is more than the number of people in the stands on any given Friday night--although that has certainly been impressive. It’s about belief. Belief that it’s never over until it’s over--on the field and in life. Belief that it’s important to have the back of the person beside you and for them to have yours. Belief that different people from different backgrounds can come together under one vision and shared goals and accomplish anything they set their minds to with hard work and determination.

So, thank you, Jackrabbits! Thank you for reminding us that Jackrabbit Nation isn’t a district, an area, or a region of any kind. Jackrabbit Nation is a place where friends and neighbors serve friends and neighbors. It’s a place where anything is possible.

Jackrabbit Nation is a STATE-OF-MIND!

Thank you, James Tanner
