The Winter Solstice, also called the hibernal solstice, occurs when either of Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. This happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere. This event has been celebrated throughout history with festivals, feasting, singing, dancing, bonfires, and spending time with loved ones. Astronomically, it marks the beginning of lengthening days and shortening nights. This annual moment when the daylight hours dwindle downward gives us permission to slow down and reflect on the past year, to pivot ourselves towards the light that comes with the approach of Spring three months later, and to restore our minds in preparation for the push of Spring activities.
The timing of the Winter Solstice helps our hardworking teachers who’ve been working all term take a muchneeded break themselves to recharge and to celebrate being with their families. The Forney Family would be remiss if it did not thank these hard-working, dedicated professionals for giving their all to their students.
This moment also gives the Board members of the Forney Education Foundation the opportunity to reflect on the past year and prepare for the next year’s opportunities to enhance the classroom experience and to tell people our story. We are in the middle of celebrating our 20th anniversary as an organization and would not be where we are today without those visionaries from 20 years ago. The evolution of the Foundation has been a steady progress of responding to the growth in the Forney ISD. We have George Brown to thank for thinking of a seemingly simple idea to help high school graduates that has evolved into helping every student that comes into the district from Pre-K to Senior. When asked the “why”, the most common response among the Board is simply “for the kids”.
Take a moment this Winter Solstice to slow down, reflect, and look to your world to discover your “why” for your community involvement.
