At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the Armistice was signed by representatives of Germany and the Entente between 5:12 and 5:20 that morning formally ending the hostilities of World War One. Since June 1, 1954, Americans have celebrated “Veterans Day,” honoring all American veterans of all wars.

As a way of thanking our veterans, the GI Bill of 1944 (post World War II) has given educational opportunities for our veterans. The GI Bill pays for college, graduate school, and training programs for the men and women in uniform. In the spirit of the GI BIll, in our history, Forney Education Foundation has paid for college scholarships, supported teacher initiatives in education, and currently funds AP/CTE certifications. That means that Forney students have earned college credit and professional development with support of FEF and the Forney Family.

As the VA puts it, Veterans Day is always on November 11, no matter what day of the week on which it falls. The observance of Veterans Day not only preserves the historical significance but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Like the GI Bill, a little extra help goes a long way for our students. As time has gone on, the GI Bill has broadened its focus, as has the Foundation. In that spirit, let us invite you to visit www.woundedwarriorproject. org to give thanks for our former soldiers, and for more information on Veterans Day, visit www.va.gov.
