The State Fair of Texas has finished its run. Everyone who had winning photos displayed in the Creative Arts Building will soon be retrieving them. Larry Golden will be picking up three photos.
Larry is an avid amateur photographer. As he started making plans for retirement, Larry decided to investigate getting back into photography. The last SLR camera (Single Lens Reflex) he had was back in the last century. Like so many others, he had turned to taking snapshots with his phone and iPad. His investigation revealed how much photography had changed in the digital age. Cameras had changed from SLRs to DSLRs (Digital Single Lens Reflex). These days cameras are actually computers with lenses. The chemistry darkroom is now digital and done on the computer.
Seven years ago friend and fellow Forney photographer, Mary Nichols, encouraged Larry to submit some of his images to the Texas State Fair Photo Competition. He was surprised to place two of his photos. Since that time Larry has placed photos each year in the competition. One year he had the honor of receiving Best in Show.
This year Larry placed first in the Child/Children Black and White Category for his “New Generation Cowboy” image. He also received Honorable Mentions for his “Independence Texas Bluebonnets” in the Flora Vista Category and for his “Walking the Clydesdales” in the State Fair Theme Category. Larry is also taking photos with his iPhone. His “Independence Texas Bluebonnets” photo was taken with his iPhone 13 Pro Max. That makes him the 3rd of the 4 State Fair Photography winners from Forney to have a winning image taken with a cell phone.
