Staff Writer To continue last week’s story, I think it only fitting to begin this column with the two faculty members, chosen by the 1972-1973 Jackrabbit Annual Staff for the honor of having the yearbook dedicated to them–Mr. Bob Lucas and Mrs. Linelle Warren, who taught me high school science and English and with whom I later was a fellow faculty member back at dear ol’ Forney High!
Mr. Lucas was known for his use of “mintus” when doing scientific math and for his “rule of thumb” pronouncements when asked “why?” about some formula or equation or chemical mixture. He also liked to say: “Boy, I’ll tell you one thing!” The yearbook dedication credited Mr. Lucas with 16 years of Forney serburg. vice at that time.
Mrs. Warren, credited with 15 years of Forney service, was known for her singing rendition of “Pine Trees,” her “suthan” accent, and her desire to keep the “red pen” manufacturers in business at research paper time.
I haven’t met a former student yet who doesn’t have a memory or story about both of them and who does not love them both. They were truly dedicated!
The SCHOOL BOARD was [row one] Donald Ray Honeycutt (Vice-President), Clyde Whittemore (President), Dr. Christine Walker (Secretary).....[row two] Frank Rhea, Kenneth Robertson, Emlyn Miller, and Gene Osborne.
Superintendent of Schools was Johnnie Henderson; High School Principal was A. D. Whitaker; Elementary School Principal was Phillip Allison; Ron Urbantke was Assistant Principal; Ed Wilson was Special Education Director; Louise Day was Counselor; Rea Thomas was Librarian. And probably three of the most needed but also most under-appreciated F. I. S. D. workers were the CUSTIODIANS: Bill Bennett, George Nichols, and Ray Bannister!
In charge of bringing Forney the ANNUAL (which was a very big deal at that time, and probably still is!) was Janice Criswell (Sponsor), and her student staff: Beverly Smith and Lisa Dozier (ad sales), Patricia Reddick, Libby Rouvaldt (coeditor), Juli Smith, Donna Hood (editor).
Forney Coaching Staff: Richard Norwood (Athletic Director/Head Coach), Boys Coaches: Ronald Urbantke, Charles McKissick, Joe Jones, Dwight Bolin, Bill Davis, and Managers: Dennis Pittmon, Anthony Tennon, Vivian Whitten-Girls Coach: Delores Gillean.
