Plants are resilient beings. Think about the tiny green leaves sprouting in sidewalk cracks and street edges you’ve seen as you walk past. A tiny spot of soil, a bit of water now and then, and a seed sprouts into a growing, albeit tiny, plant. But take that same seed, plant it in a pot with good soil, ample water, and fertilizer, and look at the difference!
Students are a lot like plants. They, too, are resilient beings. No matter what they are lacking in their lives, they continue to grow at school. But there is a point where they need more, and really great teachers see it and work toward getting that “extra” they need.
The teachers in Forney ISD are really passionate about their students and are always looking for ways to get the “extra” for their students. One of the resources teachers can utilize is a teacher-requested grant from the Forney Education Foundation. The teachers have requested different types of grants: from class sets of young adult novels for middle schoolers to cooking appliances and food for elementary Special Education students, from nonfiction periodicals for high schoolers to pottery wheels and kilns for middle school art programs. These are just a few of the many grants that have been awarded since 2008.
In 2019, for the first time in FEF history, the community had the opportunity to adopt grants before they were sent to the grant committee. The Adopt-A-Grant program was so successful that it has become a fixture in the teacher-requested grant process. The board understands how uplifting it can be to adopt a teacher’s grant as several of our Board members have done so in past years.
The outpouring of support from the community validates how a strong, supportive environment impacts students in the best way possible, showing how a little “extra” helps us all grow.
