It was the first Friday night game of the year for the Falcons. The North Mesquite Stallions, led by stand out QB Luke Sedar, came into town with high hopes. The game was sloppy with penalties and miscues according to Head Coach Eric Luster, OC Coach Velasquez, DC Gordon Booker, and SC Mike Idleman. Coach Luster summed it up by saying, “Any time you win, it’s good. But the play was not up to Falcon standards. Penalties, substitution errors, and personal fouls are not our expectation or standard.”
The Offense had its moments and racked up a total of 366 yards. #3 Crochett was 12 for 20 for 136 yards and 0 touchdowns but had one rushing TD. TC’s main target was Kasen McCoy, who had 96 yards, followed by Robinson with 26 and Sanders at 14. Rushing the ball seemed to be the call of the night as the Falcons rushed 33 times for 230 yards and 4 touchdowns. Rushing TDs were scored by 3 different players: QB Crochett 1, RB Branch 1, and RB Asuquo 2.
Kicker Jake Guardiola had a breakout night with 4 PATs and his first two field goals as a high school player. #38 Guardiola hit from 31 yards out and 37 yards out to become the second leading scorer of the night with 10 points. Special teams coordinator Idleman said he is very proud of his young kicker. Idleman also said, “Our snapper Martin Roach and holder Kelin Sanders and all the guys up front have done a great job working as a unit.” Additional special teams play came from #1 Aamii Branch who had the only return of the night for 54 yards. Other big plays on special teams came from none other than #43 Elijah Ferguson. Ferguson forced yet another fumble on the kickoff team. Coach Idleman said, “Ferguson is a beast getting down the field and making plays on every team he is on.”
The defense had a good night holding the Stallions to 300 yards total offense. DC Booker said, “We would like to see more takeaways, and there are still things that need to get taken care of as far as our technique.” DE #24 Christian Gilbert had a nice game with 4 tackles and a batted ball. Other standouts were DT #5 David Paine with 2 tackles for a loss and #36 Micheal Obi with his 3rd sack of the season.
This week the Falcons host Woodrow Wilson at City Bank Stadium. Be aware of the weather because it may rain. No matter what the weather, come out and help the Falcons go 4 and 0. Remember, it’s a great day to be a Falcon.
