Dear Aunt B,
I am thinking about moving. How would you recommend I go about making that big decision?
Move or Stay
Dear Move or Stay, Moving is a big decision for sure. I applaud your decision to deeply contemplate this decision before making the move or staying put.
Has something happened that has made you think about moving? Of course there Is a lot of emotion around your decision to consider moving. Basically, what brought this thinking on? Are you running away from something? Remember, you take yourself with you, so it is really hard to run away from things. Are you running to something? Are you considering this move for someone else?
What are your expectations about the possible move?
What are the professional opportunities you have here and what are the ones in places you are considering? Unless you don’t have to work, it is important to know what you are leaving and what opportunities await you.
Texas’ cost of living is 8% lower than the national average. You know what that means, you need to make more money in other areas to have the same lifestyle.
What do you like to do? Long long ago when Aunt B moved to Texas, I was looking for National Sports Teams, an international airport, and fishing for my husband. You get the drift. Make sure the new area has the things you like to do.
Are you moving to get closer to family or friends? It is great to be surrounded by loved ones. If they are here, that is another thing to consider. Maybe you want a break from loved ones, but it is really different when they aren’t around.
If you are considering starting a family, look at the educational opportunities. Maybe you are considering going back to school; see what is available. Online education makes this not as big of an issue, but check it out.
Honestly, are you thinking about this move to escape this heat? Sort of kidding here, but I wouldn’t blame you. Do you want to live closer to the beach or to mountains?
Think about where you see yourself in the future. Look at your long-term goals - 5 years, 10 years down the road. Does the new place better meet those needs?
Moves are physically hard and expensive. Are you up for packing? Moving all of your stuff is expensive. It also takes a lot of money to set up a new home. You must find a new place to live. You will need to have new deposits on all your utilities. There are more costs involved in a move than I can list here. Check them all out.
Visit these places you are considering. Remember, it is way different visiting than living there, but I would want you to have spent some time in the potential new location, if possible.
What is your gut saying to you? Listen to your heart. Is this a good move for you?
Grass isn't always greener on the other side. On the other hand, it can be so very exciting to start fresh in a new area. Just understand what you have ahead of you.
Ask those in your life, your loved ones, what they think of the move. Get insight from people that know you better than Aunt B.
Love, Aunt B
