Body

Dear Aunt B, Oh my goodness, I am so tired of this heat. Everyone is talking about it, and I think it is making me feel worse. I know it is hot, but what do people think? It is Texas, and it is August. Double disappointed if they are thinking it will be eighty. I am more tired of people talking about it than I am about the heat.

Enough Already. It’s Hot Dear Enough Already, It’s Hot, I hear you, brother. I am embarrassed to say that I am so blessed that the heat hasn't really even bothered me. I do however realize that there are many people really suffering. There exists a large number of people that have no air conditioning. There are large numbers of people that work outside. And to these groups, I do feel exceptionally bad for these people, and I send any comfort that's possible to them. Please do whatever is in your power to stay cool and to drink plenty of fluids.

I believe this is part of a bigger problem. One problem is we are complainers. Again, I am not talking about the people that are affected by this heat. I know there are many of you out there. I’m talking to people like me that are not really affected, thank God. Why do we complain about everything? Have you heard of the practice where one tries to not complain about anything for 30 days straight? I think it is actually that one can't say anything negative for 30 days straight. I guess that is about the same thing, isn’t it? I count myself as a pretty positive person, and I believe I have yet to make it one whole day. It has been a while since I have attempted it. So yes, I accept the challenge. I start today. But why are we so negative? I think it is mainly a habit. However, the basis of it all, in my opinion, is fear. Don’t let me go on and on about fear. I am sure you all have heard enough of Aunt B’s beliefs about fear. Simply, I believe everything is love or fear. I also believe that it is easy to tell if what is presenting itself to me is love or fear. It is my deep desire to choose love. I have surely ventured away from the heat issue, haven’t I? Bear with me a little more on this negativity thing. There are deep reasons deep down in our brains that support our negativity. Our ancestors needed to watch out for anything that could possibly harm them, so this behavior is built into us. We can override this, but it does take some work. This is a very simple explanation of this, so we may discuss it further one day. Stay tuned.

So, guess who is responsible for bringing more to the conversation than the heat. Yes, it’s you. If it bothers you, then you get to change the subject. You get to decide the talk you engage in.

I also think people use whatever is going on overall to begin their conversations. It is small talk. It is easy. It is not very personal. It doesn’t take much depth. It does serve a purpose though. You can’t really jump right into conversation about the meaning of life when you run into someone while you are shopping. Oh yes, there is the fact that there aren’t many people you want to talk to about the meaning of life or anything very deep. So it gives us something to make a short hello about.

One ounce of talk about the heat does not make it cooler, does it? For me when I talk about the heat, I start to notice it more, and yes it does bother me more. Think about ice cubes and stay cool.

Love, Aunt B
