If an A/C unit breaks it can cause numerous problems. Not having A/C over the summer, even just for a few hours, is dangerous. Service technicians in many cities are so overwhelmed this time of year, residents may have to wait a few days to receive help. Experts at Dallas Plumbing Company say there are simple things you can do to diagnose and fix A/C problems.
“Summer temperatures can be dangerous if an A/C unit goes out, and for vulnerable populations like older adults it could actually be the difference between life or death, so we prioritize calls where someone’s health could be impacted,” said Robert DiPietro, CEO of Air Pros USA. “People don’t realize how bad it can impact them until it happens, which is why being prepared and knowing what to do if your A/C breaks is incredibly important.”
When an A/C unit is broken, ventilation is paused, causing humidity levels to increase. It is uncomfortable for residents and it can promote the growth of bacteria such as mold and mildew. In addition, residents without A/C are at higher risk of heat exhaustion. Experts at Air Pros USA recommend homeowners and renters take these six steps if the A/C suddenly quits blowing cool air.
•Check the Thermostat – If the thermostat was moved or set improperly it can cause an A/C unit to struggle. Make sure the thermostat’s screen is lit indicating it is on. If not, it may simply need new batteries. Then make sure it is set to cool and try lowering it 3-5 degrees.
•Check the Power – Check the house breaker box to see if a circuit tripped. If it is not in the “on” position, turn it off and leave it for a few minutes before you reset it. If it still does not start, make sure the A/C unit is plugged in.
•Clean the Condenser – A common reason that causes an A/C unit to stop working is it is clogged with debris and air cannot be pushed out. If you can safely do so, turn off the power to the unit and carefully clean the condenser and fan blades using a soft brush.
•Look for Leaks– While condensation is normal, if the A/C unit is leaking fluid the best thing to do is to turn it off and call an expert. Trying to run a leaking A/C unit can make a problem worse.
•Replace air filters monthly – Dirty air filters can cause the A/C unit to work harder, increasing electric bills and repairs. This preventive measure should be done monthly and if needed, vacuum the air intake vents.
•Pay Attention to Noise –Are noises coming from the A/C unit? If anything sounds off there is most likely an internal issue and you will need to call a professional.
On a hot day, A/C units have a higher chance of being clogged, resulting in blocked airflow or a breakdown. Homeowners should be prepared to take simple steps to ensure safety while waiting for a professional to arrive.
