Body

Dear Aunt B, I am really tired of feeling bad. What are some things that I can do to feel better and improve my health?

Tired and Sore Dear Tired and Sore, By the way you signed your question, I am assuming you are feeling bad physically and not necessarily bad mentally and emotionally. However, it all goes hand in hand, doesn’t it?

So here you go. My best advice on feeling better and feeling better quickly.

Ouch, this hurts even coming out of my mouth, but you have to move. Movement is by far the fastest way to improve your mental and physical state. Research actually supports me on this one. Just start small if you have to; any movement helps. If you are a television watcher, decide to stand during some of your shows. If you have an impairment that keeps you from much movement, move in your chair while you sit. You can also start a walking plan. Yes, I do know it is Texas, and it is hot. Sweating will be good for you as well. Of course, check with your healthcare provider before starting anything. Drink more water if you are sweating more. Years ago, I made a playlist of all my favorite music and every morning just danced to the music for about 20 minutes. Shocker, I even looked forward to it.

Eat better foods. Take advantage of the fresh produce available right now. Eat less or no processed foods. Don’t get me started on all the ways processed foods are bad for you. I find myself desiring less meat during the summer. Make sure you get your protein through other sources.

Stay hydrated. It’s hot, drink plenty of good, filtered water to replace the extra you are losing through the extra heat. Stay away from plastic bottles if possible. I filter all my water. I also save my glass water bottles and reuse them. I wash and reuse them and keep them in my refrigerator so they are always available.

Get good sleep. If you have a problem getting sleep, again, check with your healthcare provider and determine if you have a medical reason. We have discussed many other techniques for improving your sleep. One big example is turn off the television and all your computers a few hours before bedtime, or at the very minimum wear blue blocking glasses.

If you smoke or use tobacco, stop. Enough said.

If you are overweight, it will help you to lose even 10% of your body weight. Your body will just sit better.

Is stress a problem for you? Develop a prayer or meditation routine. Do some deep breathing exercises. Build some better coping skills. Let go of anger that you are directing to yourself or others. I promise, holding onto anger is only hurting you. Biggest deal ever is to be kinder to yourself. Remember Aunt B’s favorite saying: “You can’t beat yourself better.”

Get a checkup to make sure all is well with you. There are real physical issues that can be addressed that will greatly increase your quality of life.

Finally, laugh more. Do things you enjoy. Have more fun.

Love, Aunt B
