The notion of independence is something that, as Americans, we believe is a God given right. And as John Adams wrote in a letter to his wife, “...This day shall be celebrated by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival” and that the celebration should include “Pomp and Parade-Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other.”

And we have followed that suggested advice for almost 246 years now with many variations but still the same fervor to remembering we are an independent nation. But how do we bestow independence upon our children? By teaching them critical thinking, problem solving using available information, opening up their creative mind to paint, compose, write, utilize technology and mathematics to build in space, agriculture to feed the nation--in other words-EDUCATION.

The Forney Education Foundation truly understands the importance of education and how it fosters the independent spirit that is so needed by today’s youth to achieve their personal goals. Not only does FEF fund teacher-requested grants, it sponsors Get Fired Up For Reading, STEAM camps in the summer, and also funds Project Backpack. As original Founder George Brown said, “A little help at the right time makes all the difference in anybody’s life.”

Forney Education Foundation understands how much a little bit of help can make a difference in all of FISD’s students’ lives; that is why the Board works hard to raise funds and then award them to teachers and students. How about joining FEF in granting independence to the students in Forney ISD? Please go to www.forneyisdfoundation. org and see how you can foster true independence for the students of Forney ISD. And on a personal note, the Board honored me at the Year End meeting by bestowing upon me the title of Legacy Member for the Forney Education Foundation. As I said that night, “I do it for the kids–after all, they are all OUR kids.”
