This time of year reminds all of us how grateful we are for Willis Carrier - the inventor of modern air conditioning. As Carrier was waiting on a foggy train platform in 1902, he realized that he could dry air by passing it through water to create fog – once you control the specific amount of moisture in air, you control the humidity level and its functionality inside a building or cooler box. On an educational point, as a child, Willis Carrier had trouble with fractions so his mother cut apples into pieces to demonstrate what fractions looked like compared to the whole. He later was quoted as saying that the lesson was the most important one he had ever learned because it taught him the value of intelligent problem-solving.

Professional educators use problem-solving ideas daily in their classrooms to achieve positive results for their students. And at the Forney Education Foundation, we applaud those educators who have found ideas to enhance the classroom experience for their students and submit teacher- requested grants to FEF. In fact, the Grant Committee is always interested and excited to read through the applications and imagine the positive outcomes for their students. Through the years of funding grants, the Foundation has been able to assist these teachers with their personal missions and triumphs in the classroom. The best ideas take hold and continue growing amazing outcomes in the classrooms of these professional educators.

For now, enjoy the summer in air conditioning (thanks to Willis Carrier and his mother who understood how to solve his lack of understanding fractions) while the educators relax and recharge their teaching batteries in preparation for the next school year.
