1964…..I have never forgotten the first time I heard the “BEATLES” singing group, and their first time to perform in our country was 1964…..”I Want To Hold Your Hand”…..”She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah” (alltime best seller in the U. K.) (And, I thought their hair was really long!)
2001…..Right next to Disneyland, the 70+ acres of California Adventure Park (also Disney) open for business. (…..don’t think this is related to the new “park venture” in Frisco!)
1973…..The most “famous” song for country Tom T. Hall was simply named, “I Love.” (coffee in a cup, baby ducks, tomatoes on the vine) The song ended with the simple, sweet, and oh, so sincere, “I love you, too.” I believe he was so right about SIMPLE PLEASURES….. holding the hand of a Grandparent, Parent, and especially your “honey.”
2004…..Gmail was announced as “open for free e-mail service” on April 1. Today, close to 2 million people all over the world use it. That was April Fools’ Day, but there was no fooling! (I believe “G Suite” was once a part of Google Workspace. Gmail is owned by, not sponsored by, Google.)
1970…..“Oye Como Va” (considered an important piece of American music) was recorded/released by the band, SANTANA, and was an almost overnight big hit! It had been written already in the very early 1960s by Tito Puente as a catchy dance tune. (Literally translated to “listen how it,” the words in general mean “Hey, what’s up?” or “Hey, how’s it going?”) 2018…..“Simon & Garfunkel” singing duo’s PAUL SIMON launches a farewell tour to say “good-bye” to his roles as singer/songwriter— the approximately 60 years of popularity and success was amazing! (I do believe he helped build a “bridge over troubled waters.”) The songs of Simon and Garfunkel echoed in the halls of Sikes Hall during the golden years of 1969-1973.
1997…..The Master’s Tournament’s 21 years old winner—TIGER WOODS— sets the record of youngest winner ever and begins his reign. (Move over “Arnie” and “Jack” from my era!)
1955…..KERMIT THE FROG hit television screens and said it was not very easy being green! (His job was to entertain by being kindly nice to Miss Piggy.) (He never ages!)
1990…..At age 71 years, NELSON MANDELA, famous and dedicated activist for freedom/equality, is freed from a South African prison after protesting against the segregation we call apartheid that was promoted by the government. He was a quietly persevering man, who complained very little.
1902…..The little box of animal crackers, so familiar to Americans for ages, was brought out by Nabisco for the price of a nickel. (The design was changed to animals roaming in natural habitats instead of in a circus wagon around 2020. The little carton always had a cloth handle.)
1971…..3rd mission with a crew lands on our Moon and visits the “highlands” area (a first)—Apollo 14. (Who will make the next big U. S. A. trip, our Government or private investors?)
1969…..While waiting for a donor human heart to become available, doctors use a temporary total artificial heart, developed by Dr. Domingo Liotta, to sustain a patient for 60+ hours—Dr. Denton A. Cooley implanted the pneumatic pump heart into the 47 years old patient, and it worked until the “real thing” became available!
2019…..What will this one be? Of course, it is the beginning of the ongoing COVID— 19, the Coronavirus Disease. (It seems just like yesterday that it began, and when it hit me, it “knocked me for a loop!” I don’t think the mask worked its magic!)
