Established in 2011, our restaurant is named after the LUMBERYARD that served our Community for many years. Our food is locally sourced and handmade in our “scratch” kitchen. There is only so much you can read about our food, so why not take a trip to our small town and taste our cuisine with big flavor and personality.
The Ewell Smith Family takes the trip to Edgewood about every two months and gathers for what has become a “get-together dining and visiting tradition.” This gathering began in Forney several years ago when most of the FAMILY still lived in the close surrounding area, but as time passed (and some members passed away and others just moved away), this central dining spot has become the eatery of choice for a time to eat, laugh, cry, tell small lies, exchange photos of children and grandchildren, hug and shake hands, and argue over “who should pick up the tabs.” (One family travels from Nacogdoches; another journeys from Arlington and another from the Quitman area, so you see why we need a central place!)
The starting time is “around” 10:00 a. m., give or take ten or so minutes, depending upon who is early and who is late. Mike is generally considered the “boss” of the event, especially in his mind, and he is also the official photographer and scheduler of the upcoming events. Fortunately, wife, Betty, can usually keep her hubby under control and on task!
The ages of attendees usually vary from about one or two years to about seventy or eighty years, and nearly everyone orders one of the standard breakfasts. During the most recent get-together, renegade, Don, ordered a cheeseburger, all the way, except cut the onions and add hickory sauce and crispy French fries. He was teased but pleased!
Good, strong, black coffee is a staple for many, but some would rather make it into “coffee-milk,” a la Granny Hood! And there is usually someone who needs “pepper sauce” or extra crisp bacon or runny eggs or sliced tomatoes!
Now, if you are deciding to try out this good dining experience, please do yourself a favor and ask for Cheyenne to be your waitress. She has been there for six or more years and is a “tiny” young lady who can work rings around other pairs of waiters and waitresses I have seen during my fifty-six years of living and East Texas travelling. It is almost like she knows what you need before you do!
There are several dining areas in this restaurant building, and our group always takes the one farthest to the back. It has nice big tables, windows with blinds for too sunny days, a beautiful wood ceiling, and separate restroom facilities so that you don’t have to go wandering around the whole establishment.
Portions are generous; the pies are great; coffee is hot unless you ask for it to be “iced” like I do, and the locals who watch you head towards the back are very friendly and give broad smiles.
So, if you must find a place to eat, and Forney is not the most convenient for all involved, try out the LUMBERYARD in Edgewood, and if you have time, visit their HERITAGE PARK HISTORICAL MUSEUM and surrounding 20 authentically restored and furnished buildings, showcasing the 1800s through the 1920s.
By the way, I looked at their restaurant reviews, and nearly all were five stars out of five, with a smattering of fours and one three. And I have seen their historical village three times!
