Shirley Bruner was honored with the Suzanne McDaniel Award at the Texas District and County Attorneys Association (TDCAA) Key Personnel-Victim Assistance Coordinator Annual Conference. This annual event attracts over 300 Texas prosecutor-office personnel for a week of training and recognizing the people who daily make a difference in our counties.
Each year, the TDCAA Key Personnel-Victim Services Board selects its annual award winner and presents the award at this conference in honor of Suzanne Mc Daniel. Suzanne McDaniel was a pioneer in the field of victim services in Texas. Suzanne Mc Daniel served as the first Victim Services Director for TDCAA until her untimely death in 2010. Suzanne spent her entire career devoted to serving victims of crime, and TDCAA continues to recognize those Victim Assistance Coordinators who are continuing the legacy of Suzanne.
The person selected for this award should exemplify the qualities that were so evident in Suzanne herself: advocacy, empathy, and the constant recognition of rights of victims.
“This award is such a great honor, and I was totally taken by surprise!”, said Shirley Bruner. “It was also an honor to have had 15 of my co-workers attend this training and recognition with me.”
The criteria necessary for an individual to be nominated are as follows:
•The person must be employed by a County Attorney, District Attorney, or Criminal District Attorney’s Office;
•At least a portion of the individual’s job duties must involve working directly with victims; and
•The person must have demonstrated impeccable service to TDCAA, victim services, and prosecution.
Shirley Bruner has served as the Victim Assistance Coordinator for the Kaufman County Criminal District Attorney Honorable Erleigh Wiley for over 20 years and has worked for Kaufman County since 1999.
