“Spring is a season that teaches us that change can be beautiful.” -Anonymous Spring is a bright promise that everything will be better unless you receive news that the world will shut down due to the COVID outbreak globally. But do you remember what happened? Forney ISD and many other school districts and systems said, “Wait a minute.” The amazing response across the state of Texas and specifically Forney was enough to make you sit up and say “whoa”.
The incredible response by FISD, and really other districts as well, was to say, “Give me a minute.” When the world shut down in March 2020, Forney ISD leapt into action and created an amazing plan to continue the school year for the students in the district. Within a week, Forney ISD had created a virtual school district for students in grade 4 and up, and within 2 weeks, they had established a curriculum for the K-3 students that could be utilized virtually.
And the amazing staff that was employed in FISD at that time started to pivot and figure out how to implement the rest of the school year. And did they ever! The food department implemented distribution of food for those students that were on reduced and/or free lunches. Additionally, staff realized that WiFi signals were hard to log on to in the district but, if they placed school buses in strategic locations, they could enable students to log on and participate in their schoolwork.
I have always admired how well this district has essentially “Apollo 13-ed” the situation that was facing them during the COVID epidemic. I realized that as a florist, I, too, have to pivot many times due to what is happening in flower world; therefore I feel a certain kinship with the powers that be at Forney ISD.
