This past week, Forney lost one of its beloved lifelong citizens - my friend Marilou Quinn. Marilou embodied the spirit of the Forney Community. She was a loving, wonderful Christian woman who was born, raised, and educated in Forney, graduating as the Salutatorian of her class. And she was my friend.

Her daughters are both friends of mine, and she was sweet enough to “adopt” me in as a daughter after working with me and realizing that, just like any good middle child, I was reliable and could keep a secret if necessary. She was also an amazing friend to so very many. If you were born or raised in Forney, she probably knew you or your parents or your grandparents. She knew the power that relationships have on the general quality of life in a small town –power that educators also know and use to help their students and teachers excel, power that has elevated the Forney Family to bring better educational opportunities to every student in the district.

As her obituary stated, she was a lifelong learner as she had learned how to use a computer at 60 years of age and used it until she passed away. She was creating family cookbooks for her next two family generations with collected recipes and stories. And she was a big factor in keeping the Forney Ex-Students Association going for future graduates of Forney High School.

Marilou was, simply put, a proud Forneyite. Many times I heard her speak with newcomers and welcome them into her hometown. And here is your opportunity to honor that spirit of community and education.
