February has been known as the Month of Love since the time of the Romans and has been celebrated throughout history in many different ways. Geoffrey Chaucer was the first to record St. Valentine’s Day as a day of romance in his 1375 poem, “Parliament of Foules”.

Americans began exchanging handmade cards sometime in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A. Howland began selling the first mass-produced cards in America. Howland, known as the “Mother of Valentine”, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons, and colorful pictures. Today, according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 145 million Valentine’s Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday after Christmas.

The story of Esther Howland is a great blueprint for entrepreneurship much like the purpose and focus of The OC in Forney ISD. She saw a need and created a company that employed many and was extremely successful until her death. The opportunities that will become available for the students in The OC will be varied but will give them that chance to find their future vocation.

Forney Education Foundation is very excited to be a part of the future for the students in FISD. The donations that FEF gets from its many supporters, ranging from the teachers in Forney ISD to the corporate sponsors that support the vision, enable the Foundation to support the many varied and different grants requested by the teachers in FISD.
