B Dear Aunt B, Is it weird that music can completely change my mood? I mean, it’s nice when it helps me to be motivated, but when I hear that one song (you know the one) that takes me back to the heartbreak of my life… dang. I want the good and not the bad.
Help!!!
Dear Help!!!, Oh music, I love music. The fact that I am not always listening to music surprises me. Music has the power to transform us, yes it does. Can you have the good without the bad? What do you believe? Would you even know the good without the bad? Would you know real love, joy, or passion if you hadn’t experienced some of the lack of it? I may be getting a little too deep here. Back up, Aunt B.
Maybe the key here is to ride the storms when the storms come up in the music and in life. Never give up the transformation aspect of music. Use music for all it’s worth.
Make a playlist of songs for all the feelings you want to experience. This is a great way to take charge of your feelings. You know you do have control over your feelings, right? If you don’t have control over those feelings, when would be a good time to start? Right now is the best time to start. Get help if you need it, but start. Life is so much better on the other side of letting your feelings run you. Feelings are all good. We need all of them, and pretending we only have good is no way to really live. But control you must.
When the heartbreak songs come on the radio or whatever your listening device is, enjoy them. Let them take you back to whatever you need from that time. Just don’t stop at the heartbreak. Bring yourself all the way through it to victory. Use music and whatever you have to feel all your emotions. Just don’t lay down and die in the heartbreak.
Have you started your playlists yet? What are some of the songs that might go on your victory playlist? Sometimes I use the words to pick the right songs, and sometimes it is just the beat of the music. I have just recently heard Miley Cyrus’s new song, FLOWERS. Now, I didn’t know I was a Miley Cyrus fan, but I think I am becoming one. Nothing like matching Miley with the great humanitarian Dolly Parton to make you take a new listen. I didn’t even know I was a Dolly Parton fan, but man I love good people and good music of all genres. Back to the FLOWERS song, I am not in the heartbreak of having a love that has gone wrong, thank God, but I love the beat of that song. I also love the idea of the song. We all need to realize we can love ourselves better than anyone else can love us. You might not like the song but go listen and see if you feel the empowerment. You might hate it; you might love it. It doesn’t really matter; it is just a place to start. Find your music and listen baby, listen.
Love, Aunt B
