Dear Aunt B, Eating well is my new goal. I don’t want to diet anymore. I don’t want to eat processed food anymore. I don’t want to NOT enjoy my food anymore. I do want to weigh less and feel better. Is it possible to have it all? Have my cake and eat it too Dear Have my cake and eat it too, Yes, I believe you can have your cake and eat it too. I think maybe all the wishes you have listed above are exactly how we should handle this topic.
Best food available should always be our goal. It is what we need to eat all of the time. But then there are the times when it is best to have what you desire and want most. It is my desire that the two of these, the best foods available and what I want, become more and more the same thing. As with everything, we all need to find what works for us individually. It would be so much simpler if there was a one size fits all. It would sure be much less confusing. However, it just doesn’t exist. Our bodies are all somewhat different. Our lifestyles are different, and our desires are different.
Some people swear by a cheat meal. For me a cheat meal every week does not work, but I know many people that it does. What I mean by a cheat meal is to eat whatever eating plan you have decided on all but one meal a week. Why this hasn’t worked for me in the past is because it by definition makes good foods and bad foods. This repeats a pattern of being good or bad. When I operate with that mentality, I remain in a beat myself up mode. I know that that does not work for me. It also doesn’t work for me because it stimulates my brain in ways that start the hard part of the process (breaking the habits) over every week. That being said, once I have established good eating habits for an adequate amount of time, I did find that one meal every now and then didn’t disrupt my healthy eating plan.
What works better for me is to find healthier ways to eat what I desire. When I eat well, I don’t have much of an appetite. This shows me that what I eat for more is entertainment and boredom more than actual hunger. There are so many options available to find healthier foods. I have found Instagram to be a fabulous source of finding recipes for healthy great tasting foods.
I agree with your decision to not eat processed foods anymore. No way they are good for us. Most of all that we want can be made with healthier versions without a lot of fuss. Again, Instagram is a good place to look for these recipes. On the other side of the coin, if you do eat processed food, it is not the end of the world. Just enjoy it, watch how your body responds to it and move on.
It is so important to enjoy our food. Food is fuel, I know, but I sure do enjoy the tasting of it all. Eating is often a very social activity so finding ways to enjoy this journey is really important. Actually, eating slowly and chewing well is a great way to enjoy your food.
So, weighing less is also a goal of mine. I think much of what we have discussed leads to weighing less.
Eat only when you are hungry.
Eat fresh healthy food. Eat slowly. Chew well. Move more. Be kind to yourself. Get good sleep. Hydrate with good clean water.
Love, Aunt B
