The region of Northeast Texas that Forney is located in has some of the most variable weather in Texas. One day it is windy, sunny, and 80 degrees; the next day it is rainy, stormy, and high 70s. Autumn is a challenge for gardeners and, in a great sense, teachers. Both of these groups have young, growing minds that need to be nurtured and protected from the ever changing outside “weather elements.” Or, in the case of a classroom, the many variable activities that dominate the fall calendar.

Professional educators can steer their students toward steady learning by utilizing the purposes of the activities in their curricula structures. For example, Halloween activities can be used for art projects, studying the culture of Dia de los Muertos leads to geography and history, learning about Veterans Day leads to American and world history. Great teachers know how to engage their students’ interests and teach the lessons at the same time.

Forney Education Foundation is supportive of the innovation of the professional educators in Forney ISD. The teacher-requested grants that were submitted, approved, and funded show how much thought these teachers give to their classes’ curricula in response to their own personal experience in the classroom. These grants create a little extra help to weather the storms that teachers might find in the classroom. Won’t you visit www.forneyisdfoundation. org and help us get weather-ready?
