Recognizing different learning styles among the students in a classroom is one of the many skills a great teacher possesses. And then incorporating the styles into the lesson plans takes greater skill.
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
Special Education teachers only have a limited amount of intervention time with their students. And the teachers are targeting specific skill deficits. First, the teacher has to catch their attention to keep them engaged in the limited time available. Laura Cottle, at Claybon Elementary and a grant recipient, knows that utilizing game-based learning as well as involving students in hands-on activities helps keep them focused. With the materials purchased due to funding her teacher-requested grant from the Forney Education Foundation, she was able to buy materials that help with RTI. In education, response to intervention or RTI, is an approach to provide early, systematic, and appropriately intensive assistance to at-risk and/or underperforming students. “Overall, these resources I was able to purchase have made RTI engaging, fun, interactive, and hands on. Being able to incorporate games and hands-on activities makes the learning fun and engaging and less like work. The students I work with love playing the games and using the manipulatives that we received. I am so thankful to the Forney Education Foundation and their donors for making this possible.” - Laura Cottle, Claybon Elementary School FEF couldn’t fund these teacher-requested grants without the help of the donors who recognize the value of great teachers helping all of their students achieve their highest level of learning.
