Pirate Stadium was buzzing as Homecoming 2022 festivities got underway. The Crandall Pirates, coming off their first defeat of the season, looked to rebound in a big district matchup with the Mesquite Poteet Pirates.
Mesquite Poteet kicked the ball out of the back of the endzone to start the game. Senior quarterback Luke Moffitt trotted onto the field after missing last week’s matchup due to an ankle injury. This would be a huge boost to the Pirate offense and the team to have their leader back.
From the first play of scrimmage, Moffitt would show that his ankle was fine. Moffitt rolled out of the pocket for an eight-yard run to give the Pirates a manageable second down. The Pirate offense would march down the field, only to be stopped by the Poteet defense in the red zone. Senior kicker Brandon Perez came out and nailed a 23-yard field goal straight through the uprights. This was the first of many kicks on the night for Perez!
Both defenses would force each other to punt once before Crandall took possession again on offense. Crandall’s offense worked quickly on the field, scoring on the fourth play of the drive. Moffitt rolled out of the pocket and hit his favorite target, Oklahoma commit Samuel Omosigho, in the endzone for a 26-yard touchdown reception. Moffitt would tack on a two-point conversion to make the score Crandall 11 Poteet 0.
The Crandall defense came up big this night forcing an almost complete shutout. Junior running back Andrew Anderson ran on the field after a forced punt. On the first run of the drive, Anderson took it to the house from 59 yards out. The Pirate run game would play an integral part on the amount of points scored.
Senior running back Chris Abron came onto the field for the next offensive series. The first play of the drive, Abron was handed the ball and scored from 68 yards out on a monster run! Crandall would get two more offensive series in the last two minutes! They scored on each possession in a quick manner. Moffitt hit Junior receiver Joshua Smith in the endzone for a 24-yard touchdown reception. Abron would run for his second touchdown of the night from four yards out. The score at halftime was Crandall 40 Poteet 0.
Crandall would kickoff to start the second half. This would be the only series that Poteet managed to get anything done on the offensive side of the ball. Junior quarterback Josh Hobbs took the Poteet offense down the field on a 12-play scoring drive. Hobbs hit receiver Jeremiah Taylor in stride for a 27-yard touchdown reception. Crandall was up 40-7 with six minutes remaining in the game.
Crandall would come back on the field and put together another successful scoring drive from the air. Moffitt hit junior receiver Logan Wilbanks in the endzone for a 12-yard touchdown reception. Anderson would tack on his second touchdown of the night from one yard out to make the final score Crandall 54 Poteet 7.
All cylinders were firing on point for the Crandall offense and defense this night! Anderson and Abron both had 150 plus yards of rushing and two touchdowns each! Crandall had 402 total rushing yards and 123 throwing yards. That equaled a combined 503 yards of offense on the night! The Crandall defense came up big with two fumble recoveries and many forced three and outs on the night.
This was a huge win for Crandall going into their bye week. They are now 4-1 overall on the season with a 1-1 record in district play. Crandall is sitting in third place behind Lovejoy and Melissa. Crandall’s next opponent will be the Greenville Lions on Friday October 7th in Greenville.
