By Patrick Luecke Photos by Jason Bowie Crandall’s week two matchup was against rival Kaufman in The Battle of 175. Last season’s heartbreaking loss to the Lions in Kaufman was not forgotten in the Pirates’ minds. The build up to Friday’s game was contagious as all of Crandall came out in support.

The opening kickoff was received by Crandall and returned to the 34-yard line. Luke Moffitt and company came onto the field ready to attack. Unfortunately, the Pirates offense stalled on their opening possession resulting in a punt. Brandon Perez came on and pinned the Lions deep in their own territory on the ten-yard line. This would result in a punt for Kaufman as they weren’t able to get it past the 35-yard line.

The Pirates started their second drive with a run by Chris Abron. Abron gained seven yards on the run plus a late hit out of bounds by Kaufman. This 22-yard play propelled Crandall’s offense down the field. On the sixth play of the drive, junior running back Andrew Anderson took the handoff seven yards into the endzone. This put Crandall up 7-0 midway through the first quarter.

Brandon Perez lined up for the kickoff and sent one through the endzone for his first of many touchbacks on the night. The Pirate defense showed up and forced a quick three and out only allowing one positive yard on the drive. Crandall took possession and rewarded the defense for their hard work. On the second play of the drive, Moffitt handed the ball to Abron who took it 67 yards for the score!

The Lions’ next possession would be their only score of the first half. Quarterback Ty Burleson would lead Kaufman on a nine play drive down the field resulting in a 30-yard field goal. Crandall led 14-3 going into the second quarter.

Junior receiver Joshua Smith would excite the crowd with his speed on this drive. Moffitt connected with Smith on a 71-yard pitch and catch to start out the drive. The next play, Anderson ran it in from four yards out for his second touchdown of the game.
