CRANDALL VARSITY FOOTBALL
Body

By Patrick Luecke Photos by Jason Bowie Friday night was the first week of high school football! An exciting matchup between Crandall and Forney ensued. These teams have had some incredible finishes in the past two meetings. The stats are incredible with seven combined overtimes and the scoring of 173 combined points! Forney won the toss and deferred to receive the ball in the second half. Senior Luke Moffitt took the field as the varsity quarterback instead of the standout receiver he had become over the past two years. I asked Moffitt how he felt about switching from receiver to quarterback. Moffitt said, “I felt ready and have worked really hard to get to this point with my teammates. I have a great relationship with Coach Hardin and I’m glad he can trust me to run his offense.”

Moffitt’s first three passes of the drive were completions, the third one being a 40-yard completion to Oklahoma Sooner commit Samuel Omosigho. This connection set Crandall in good field position on Forney’s own 29-yard line. The Jackrabbit defense stood strong and stopped the Pirates’ fast paced offense. Senior kicker Brandon Perez came in and nailed his first field goal of the season from 25 yards out.

Forney’s first possession was a successful 11 play drive that ended in a touchdown. The score was 7-3 Forney. Crandall has a dangerous combo in the backfield with Moffitt at quarterback and Chris Abron as the running back. The two combined for six rushes out of the eight-play drive down the field. It ended with Abron running it in from two yards out for the score. Crandall took the lead 10-7.

At this point a huge dark cloud came over Pirate Stadium, and rain poured the rest of the half. This is where the Pirates took control of the game. Crandall’s defense forced a quick three and out, only allowing Forney two positive yards in the drive. Punter Kofi Eduful struggled to gain control of the snap as the rain came down. Eduful regained possession of the football and ran it out of
