By Henry S. Higdon III
There is a story that is told of a fisherman who wanted more. This covetous appetite, I might remind you is part of the human physiological make up. Measures of desire are routed in and even chained to our humanity.
One day there was a Fisherman who made a great catch. This was not great in mass like the measures of fish caught by the great nets of the massive ships in the fishery industry, oh no. For this is nothing shy of the norm. But this catch was a great catch. For as many of the fisherman that have led massive fish tours, many of them (if not most of them) all possess a great respect for the pole fisherman. This was demonstrated by the fishery ships with a fishing line leading from (a pole) coming from the inside of the helm and leading out and into the sea. On this particular day “Pro”, as they called him, caught one of the most difficult fish to catch. For the sake of this story, we will call it the “Pride” fish. The Pride fish many a great fishermen tried to catch one their entire lives but only lived to die and never caught this kind of fish. Many fishermen’s hearts have been broken by snapped lines, or by a mismanagement of the “tug of (fish) war” only to see the fish pull out of the water, looking as almost to taunt a smile, a verbal insult, and finally snap his or her tail and return to the aqua world. On this particular day, it was as if the God’s of the Sea checked the books and decided that today, “Pro” would be a made Seaman among men. He caught the fish celebrated his catch and told all about the catch. He wasn’t taunting or bragging, but in great astonishment and disbelief postured himself as fortunate to be able to see it happen to him. When interviewed, (“How’d you do it”), he responded, “It honestly baffles me because I didn’t do anything different or unusual. There was nothing different from any other time I’ve gone out to fish. I have had close encounters and heart breaking near catches of the day, but today unlike any other day, God said, “It shall be. And it was that’s it.
Unsatisfied with his answer, the reporter probed, “So what your saying is that, your consistency, determination, and a little mojo (lucky sock or shirt) is the mysterious Ingredient that made your day special and historic? To which Pro corrected, “Nope not consistency but itdoes help, neither my determination, but again, it helps. What made the difference is not a little mojo T-shirt, or a mojo dirty sock, but all the mojo of the Holy Spirit and no me, get it. I can’t take credit from the Holy Spirit. To which the reporter grimaces saying okay that’s it. This report is over, this guy is one of them!
When asked, “What are you going to do with the fish”, he replied...I’m gonna eat it. He went home.
When he eats the fish he plays with his daughter saying in his strong African accent, “Eat the eyes and now you will see as the fish sees, eat the fins and now you will swim as the fish swims, and last but not least, eat the brain so that you may think like the fish thinks.” (Putting those parts on her plate). Remember my child, he continues, “You are what you eat”. To which his daughter asks him, “why do you want to think like a dead fish? Don’t you mean you want the craftiness and wisdom of the fish that no man can catch?”
“Smart girl”, the father laughs pridefuly. “Well”, the father defends, “in order to get that mind you have to catch it.” Just then Mrs. Pro enters the room and says, “Perhaps you should pray that no matter what you eat, that you possess gratitude, and that God make you smart enough to catch what your family needs to nourish their apetites. May you never get overwhelmed by senseless appetites, treasures, and prides shared among lost men. What matters of fish you cannot eat when your belly is empty?”
“Be grateful for what you have. What you don’t have is irrelevant and too much to consider”. Pro’s daughter put her hands together, closed her eyes, bowed her head and prayed, “Thank you for our daily bread, thank you for my gifts, talents, and individuality. Thank you for food to eat today. Make us humble and wise. Praise the Lord. Amen.
WHILE MANY BOAST OF THEIR PERCEIVED ACCOMPLISHMENTS, FEW TURN BACK TO GOD TO TRULY GIVE THANKS. IN ALL THINGS REMEMBER, HE IS WORTHY OF OUR PRAISE.
John 15: 4,5 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. 5 “ Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who re-main in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.
